Malcolm Ginsberg is to retire, or so he says. Eighty-three on the ominous date 7 October, the last Tavel News Update would have gone out. He is staying around however, acting as advisor in the industry, clients requesting animosity. With wife Linda it is Cunard Queen Anne later in the month, having had his first sea journey (cruise) to Australia in 1951.
Sometimes controversial, the Guild of Travel Writers would not have him as a member, he has mixed being an investigative travel reporter, the first to file mid-air for The Times when flying to New York, and making an inaugural Concorde landing, big news in Glasgow. St Helena was another first. As a PR person Brymon Airways was a client which led to London City Airport. ANA (All Nippon Airways) lasted for ten years, MG breaking all the rules and sitting on a Tristar jump seat for an exciting landing at the old Hong Kong Airport. He somehow mixed cars and planes as a one time PPL (private pilot licence) holder and a member of the Guild of Motoring Writers wrote numerous road tests for BTN (Business Travel News – which he owned), and as Lotus cars Public Relations Officer, dreampt up the Total Mobility Package, requiring a Piper plane, Lotus Plus 2, and a Raleigh bicycle. Colin Chapman on a bike made the front pages. Lotus was not all glamour, Jochen Rindt being lost at Monza with Ginsberg in attendance, and having left Lotus being called on a dark Saturday afternoon by the Press Association to confirm the identity of Graham Hill’s aircraft.
As a publisher he produced the very comprehensive Directory of British Aviation for 20 years, also the Airline Public Relations Organization (APRO) Directory, and was a founder member of the Aviation Club. Having first cruised (ten pound pom) to Sydney in 1951, he has been at the forefront of promoting seaborne holidays since QE2 in 1976 and still gives talks.
Ginsberg says he would like to stay around until the 40th anniversary of London City Airport, opened by the Queen on 5 November 1987, the foundation stone laid by the then Prince of Wales just 18 months earlier.
