+ Airport passenger numbers and ownership

Britain’s major airports have individually published their passenger throughputs for last year, often with predictions (they refuse to use the word ‘guess’) for 2023.  Travel News Update is the first to highlight in its February edition.

The overall figures for the most part are substantially down on 2019, pre-pandemic, but the December figures indicate matters are much better for the most part with the numbers only 90% of pre-pandemic.

As a comparison Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport saw traffic double to 52.5m travellers last year compared with 2021, but this was still nearly 20m lower than in 2019, with the Dutch Government imposing restrictions on aircraft movements.  At Berlin, in its full first year, Brandenburg passed 19.85m passengers through, compared with 24.2m for the now closed Tegel and 11.42m at Schönefeld.  Heathrow was Europe’s busiest airport last year and the combined London number of 144m (LHR, LGW, STN, LTN & SEN) is far in excess of any mainland European city.

On Thursday 2 February John Holland-Kaye announced his  forthcoming retirement as CEO of Heathrow Airport.  He says that he has no plans other than to take a holiday.
