What happens when the former, very effective, Chairman of the House of Commons Transport Committee is requested by that group to return, but this time as a Government Minister?
It has come about for Huw Merriman, the Member of Parliament for Bexley, and now Rail Minister. The boot was clearly on the other foot.
Quizzed by Committee Labour member Ben Bradshaw on rail strike costs, Merriman seemed uncomfortable although positive in his retort "If you look at it [through] that particular lens, then absolutely, it's actually ended up costing more than would have been the case if it was just settled."
There is a moral to the story. Perhaps.
Is the extra pay, status and responsibility worth it? Or was it just a move by the Government to ‘take out’ one of its most formidable critics?!
