The Public & Commercial Services Union (PCS) has announced that over 1,000 Passport Office workers will launch a five-week strike starting on 3 April and running to 5 May.
Around 25% of Passport Office staff will be involved, with substantial delays in passport processing times predicted.
It has been timed to hit the peak of applications as passengers submit in advance of summer holiday plans.
Most countries require a minimum of three months validity on a passport (and some six). Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia and Finland just need current validity. For most cruise lines it is also three months but this depends on ports of call. For Ireland passports are not required.
In a statement Mark Serwotka, the trade union General Secretary, said: “This escalation of our action has come about because, in sharp contrast with other parts of the public sector, ministers have failed to hold any meaningful talks with us, despite two massive strikes and sustained, targeted action lasting six months.”
In a cynical response business traveller John Smith said: “It seems that the PCS members have really got themselves organised and have their own passports in place for a five-week overseas holiday.”
