Amsterdam reprieve

If you are planning ahead with flights to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol for next winter, keep an eye on the news headlines and book early.

In a bid to cut carbon emissions and noise pollution, the Netherlands government proposed last year that flights from one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs be cut from 500,000 to 460,000 movements per year.  However, a judge has now ruled that the regime cannot proceed with these proposals, but the situation remains fluid.

The move was welcomed by environmentalists but condemned by the Netherlands’ aviation industry, resulting in a case being brought by airlines and civil aviation organisations, led by Dutch flag carrier KLM.  To complicate matters further the Dutch State is the majority owner of the Royal Schiphol Group, holding nearly 70% of the shares with the City of Amsterdam at 20%, and Rotterdam just over 2%. French airport operator Groupe ADP owns the remaining 8%.

In a statement Ruud Sondag, the CEO of Royal Schiphol Group, has announced plans for a night scheduled flight curfew by 2025 and the total banning of business jets.  There will also be restrictions on noisy aircraft.
