China flights

Virgin Atlantic has resumed daily services between Heathrow and Shanghai with both passenger and cargo operations.  It is in partnership with China Eastern for further connections.

The move comes following a relaxation in travel restrictions between the two countries, which sees the borders fully reopening to foreign nationals for the first time since 23 December 2020. Covid rules still apply.

Following the restart announcement earlier this year, there has been strong demand for both business and leisure travel in both directions. China remains a key trading partner to the UK, and Virgin points out that Shanghai is the country’s largest city, an important connector for the UK and China.

Shanghai International Airport (PVG) is served by five airlines (Air China, British Airways, China Eastern, China Southern and Virgin Atlantic) from Heathrow with all offering at least a single flight.  The Chinese carriers are able to overfly Russia, taking around 11hrs 30mins, the British airlines around one hour longer. Only Air China currently operates from London to the Chinese capital of Beijing.
