AOA dinner

The Minister of State for Aviation, Baroness Vere of Norbitonthe keynote speaker.

Once again the Grand Ballroom of the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, was the venue for the Airport Operators Association (AOA) annual (black tie) dinner on Monday 5 June.

Although a member of the House Lords, Charlotte Vere has been a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport (DfT) since 2019, overseeing roads, motoring agencies, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), buses and taxis, light rail and devolution. Her brief was changed during three prime ministers and in November 2022 she was confirmed as the Government transport spokesperson in the House of Lords with responsibility for aviation, space and local transport, including buses.

Of great interest to the airport community, in March of this year she spoke out on the misery passengers faced last year when their flights were severely delayed or cancelled at the last minute.  “It was simply unacceptable.”

“We’ve made it clear that improvements can and must be made, so the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are working closely with the industry to build a resilient ground handler market for years to come”.

Airports are confident that this summer will be much smoother, following a successful Easter peak and further recruitment and staff training to bring resilience up.

Her AOA appearance should make for an interesting evening as the air travel industry returns to pre-pandemic numbers and begins to grow.
