Buckingham Palace and Holyroood are open.
Whilst it has been open to the public since 1993 when the late Queen took her summer holiday in Balmoral, Buckingham Palace this summer will display the magnificent outfits worn by King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their historic Coronation in 2023.
The highlight of the display is the apparel worn by Their Majesties as they departed from Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach and then appeared on the palace balcony to greet the crowds. The Robe of Estate worn by The King, which was also worn by his grandfather King George VI for his Coronation in 1937 is displayed as is Queen Camilla’s beautiful Coronation Dress and Robe of Estate.
The Coronation spectacle is included as part of the summer opening of the State Rooms 14 July – 24 September 2023.
For a more exclusive experience, on a day when the Palace is usually closed to the public, a private tour of the display and talks by curator, Sally Goodsir, is offered. Sally's discourse focuses on the history of Coronation robes, which are the most special ceremonial dress worn by the sovereign, and the contemporary crafts and skills which were brought together for this year’s Coronation textiles.
To complete the experience, it continues with light refreshments on the West Terrace overlooking the famous Buckingham Palace Garden, followed by a curator-led tour of the Coronation display in the Palace’s Ballroom. The special visit costs £145.
Also announced are evening tours of Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
Standard admission tours may be purchased on a day when the Palace is open by visiting their website.
