Lumo trains and the strikes

Lumo defeats the Unions. In spite of the disruption caused by the series of rail strikes across the country promoted by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), Lumo (owned by First Group) continues to operate a limited (it has only five train sets), but reliable service between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley, always stopping at Newcastle with some trains stopping at Stevenage and Morpeth.

One class, the seats are comfortable, 2+2 with the occasional four-seat table, including electrical connections and courtesy wi-fi (See COMMENT), and far more spacious than with low-cost airline cabins.

Service on board is provided by just two staff, who work their way quickly down the train.  On offer is a variety of snacks and drinks, but if you want the excellent M&S sandwiches these need to pre-ordered on the Lumo web site.

A recent trip to Newcastle from London was on time both ways and pretty full.

Asked about the future of the operation Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director, said: “We were ambitious when we launched Lumo in 2021, in every way. We adopted a ground-breaking strategy to deliver great value fares, went further than other train operators in being environmentally conscious, and we’re clear about our mission to get passengers off domestic flights, and onto our trains.”

No answer to whether any more rolling stock would be ordered, or new destinations such as Aberdeen, Glasgow or Inverness.
