It's back. What's claimed to be the world's biggest air show.
After four years, normally alternating with Farnborough, the Paris Air Show (Salon International de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace) returns Monday 19 June (until Sunday 25 June). Held at La Bourget since 1953, Farnborough points out that its inaugural show was in 1948.
This year’s extravaganza will highlight the non-appearance of Russia, although in the past it has not shrouded itself with glory (1973 – Tu 144 and 1999 Sukhoi Su 30).
From a commercial airline point of view Airbus and Boeing will again vie for attention, all the orders announced having been negotiated months before.
Delta is strongly linked for a major Airbus pledge, whilst Qatar Airways, always ready to seek a publicity opportunity, could announce a large Boeing commitment.
On what is really a minor placement it will be interesting to see if British Airways CityFlyer confirms an interest in either Airbus A220 or Embraer E-190 ER to replace its ageing fleet of earlier Embraers.
ATR continues to dominate the propjet market it used to share with Bombardier, now renamed de Havilland Canada (DHC). The future for the Q400 will no doubt be explained. In July 2022, DHC announced that it would review the Dash 8 programme and supply chain later in the year, and could restart production in the middle of the decade if conditions allow. The Calgary site, where the company produces DHC-6 Twin Otters, would be the likely venue.
Travelling to Le Bourget from the French capital is arduous, but simple. The easy route is via the B line train from Paris, try and get on the now courtesy bus service or take the uphill route to the airfield entrance (20 minutes). Private transport can be sometimes no quicker, and even helicopters from the Issy-les-Moulineaux Heliport, near the Eifel Tower, can be stuck in a queue.
The next Farnborough Air Show will take place 22–26 July 2024.
