The renaissance of Southend Airport continues with the confirmation by easyJet that winter ski flights to Geneva will take off from 16 December, operating twice weekly on Saturday and Wednesday.Geneva becomes the sixth destination easyJet serves from the Essex airport alongside Amsterdam, Faro, Majorca, Malaga and Paris.
Southend previously flew to Geneva between 2013 to 2020 and served more than 570,000 passengers in that period. At its peak in 2019, the award-winning airport saw more than 94,900 passengers travel to and from Geneva Airport.
It comes just weeks after easyJet announced a new year-round flight to Paris, starting from Sunday, 29 October.
Southend Airport was hit by the pandemic more than most regional operations with a dramatic fall from 2.4 million passengers in 2019 to just under 90,000 roundtrip commercial passengers in 2022 according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority. An award-winning airport it continues to rely on mainly leisure traffic.
John Upton, CEO, Southend Airport, is keen to remind would-be holidaymakers from the eastern suburbs of London as well as Essex and Suffolk of its excellent rail connections. It is also sited just off the A127, which links to the M5.
"Our dedicated train station is just paces from the terminal – 53 minutes from London Liverpool Street, 43 minutes from Stratford and just over an hour from Oxford Circus, with connectivity via the Elizabeth Line at Shenfield,” he said.
