Another link with it past has gone. British Airways (BA) has axed its familiar ‘Speedbird Café’ for the bland ‘High Life Café’. ‘Speedbird’ dates from the BOAC pilot call sign. For younger readers British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) merged with British European Airways (BEA) in 1974 to create BA.
Also in keeping with modern trends for sports fans, the airline has introduced a dedicated ‘Women in Sport’ film category for its back of seat videos, with a wide range of sporting highlights, just in time for the football season.
Other cabin service news includes that cream tea is being introduced on all long-haul flights departing London before 17:00. This is for World Traveller and World Traveller Plus only. The in-flight sparkling wine in Club World is being switched to a British wine, Balfour Rosé de Noirs, which is made only from red grapes. Rosé champagne, on the other hand, uses Chardonnay in its blend.
