With the return of daily flights to Birmingham, Qatar Airways now serves five UK airports, with only Cardiff currently dropped from pre-pandemic days, but expected back late December. Dublin is also on the schedule. An unexpected guest for the inaugural was Scotsman David Coulthard, a 13 times Grand Prix winner, commentator and popular figure with motor racing fans. Perhaps it was not surprising given the British Grand Prix at nearby Silverstone and Qatar Airways now the sponsor of Formula One.
Birmingham Airport says it is back to the full quota of long-haul carriers prior to Covid. Gary Kershaw, Qatar Airways’ UK boss, says that he is hoping to move to two flights per day in the future in order to maximise connection options.
The flights are operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft with 254 seats, 22 in Business Class and 232 Economy. No Suite on this service but unless you need the ability to sit as a foursome it does not matter. The superb catering, space and facilities available will be the same.
One thing to be careful about. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays flights depart Birmingham at 14:45, arriving in Doha at 23:40 whilst on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays the timing is 09:00 for a 17:55 landing at Doha. Up to 80% of passengers at Doha are connecting. With the new daily service travellers to and from the Midlands will find anything East or South of Qatar easier to get to.
