Airport parking costs

Ben Clatworthy, Transport Correspondent of The Times, has flagged up the cost of drop-off passengers at British airports this summer.

Stansted, in Essex, remains the most expensive airport to arrive at with an initial charge of £7 for 15 minutes, but it is the same as last year.

Southampton Airport has put up its fee by 50% to £6 for 20 minutes, while Belfast has raised its prices from £2 to £3 for ten minutes.

Holidaymakers being dropped at Glasgow pay £5 for 15 minutes, up from £4 last year, while Aberdeen has also increased its rates by the same amount. At Leeds Bradford the rate has increased to £6 for ten minutes. Among the other London airports, Gatwick and Luton charge £5 for ten minutes. Heathrow also takes £5 per car but does not specify how long is permitted but will remove any cars left unattended.

Passengers can save money by exploring other drop-off options. Many airports allow motorists to drop people free of charge in or near the long-stay car parks, with travellers then required to take a courtesy shuttle to the terminal.

Dropping off passengers at unauthorised points within the airport boundaries is prohibited and most airports use automatic number plate recognition technology to fine anyone stopping illegally.
