The Longest Commercial Flight Leaderboard
Non-stop London – Sydney
With Qantas fast developing a non-stop route between Sydney and London both ways, aviation data supplier OAG (and one time BTN sponsor) has published what it calls ‘The Longest Commercial Flight Leaderboard’.
OAG is the company supplying the arrival/departure information seen on screens at airports.
Top of the leader board at present is Singapore Airlines Kennedy – Changi at 9,526 miles and takes an average of 18 hours and 40 minutes to complete. Singapore also offers the alternative New York Liberty Airport across the Hudson in Newark, which is two miles less.
In third place is Qantas with its Perth – Heathrow (PER – LHR) operation experienced by BTN in June 2018. The current schedule suggests 16 hours 45 minutes from London and 17 hours 20 minutes for the return (from OAG). See www.btnews.co.uk/article/13291
Australia's national carrier has ordered a fleet of Airbus A350-1000 jets which it claims are capable of reaching any major city in the world direct from Sydney. If all goes well ‘Project Sunrise’ will see its fruition in late 2025 and take about 20 hours.
The route, began in 1947, once took 58 hours and seven stops.
When launched prior to the pandemic, Alan Joyce, then Chief Executive, said in a statement that it was the “final frontier” in terms of commercial air travel.
London – Auckland (New Zealand) is 11,393 miles and would take 23 hours 30 minutes.

Twenty four hours in an aircraft. Thatâs easy. Before the War the regular airship flights from Friedrichshafen to New Yorkk took 53 to 78 hours westbound and 43 to 61 hours the other way.
