+ London airports hit by ULEZ

The Mayor of London’s controversial Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has been expanded to cover all of Greater London.

If you have a petrol vehicle under 16 years old or diesel vehicle under six years old then it is highly likely that it meets the required standards.  Nothing changes for car owners in Central London since it is already in the ULEZ zone.

For London City Airport users with elderly cars coming from areas outside the reach of the Mayor, that is outside the GLA (Greater London Authority) you may need to pay £12.50 to drive to the airport.  Essex residents be warned.

At Heathrow the situation is a little more complicated but has the same result.

The stretch of the M4 which passes the Heathrow Central Area (T2 & T3) is not included in ULEZ. However, as soon as you turn onto the Heathrow slip road, towards Bath Road, you need to pay.

For Terminal 5 users it is a similar situation.

The M25 is again outside the ULEZ zone, but as soon as you turn off towards T5 it will be triggered. Terminal 4 lies in the GLA area but borders Surrey at Ashford on the A30, but long stretches of the perimeter road at Stanwell is not in the Mayor’s remit.

If you need a hotel with car parking use a property to the west of the M25 or in Surrey, and use their transport to the terminal of choice.

ULEZ does not apply to Gatwick Airport, nor the M25 or M23.

Has anyone driven up Finchley Road, a London gateway, in recent times. It’s 20mph, and for buses too. If you think about it as vehicles are now spending 50% more time on this and other major highways. Traffic must be emitting more pollution than before. Next employment, for walkers with a red flag.

Joe Smith, Cambridge

We shall see what the stats prove in 12 months time with a reduction of emissions. The problem is (and it is a good one) that with the rise of electric cars in London, it will not be possible for a like-to-like comparison.

Sylvia Shaw, Surbiton

The Zone is a challenge to Labour voters, as shown with the retention of Uxbridge and South Ruislip by the Conservatives. London has a preponderance of socialist voters, many less well off with old cars, non-compliant. Mayor Khan has proved to be a typical politician only interested in power. His predecessors, Johnson and Livingston served a global ambassadors for the city. Khan has not stepped outside its precincts.

Jeff Green, Tottenham - London

I have an elderly MG, not much used, and kept in a Hornsey lockup. If I drive around in town will I be caught out with the charge, or are the cameras on borders?

I am able to confirm that the de Havilland Museum is outside the zone, but Hampton Court less so!

Malcolm Ginsberg, United Kingdom

The wonderful de Havilland Aircraft Museum is located next to Salisbury Hall off Junction 22, M25 on the B556. Whether it is in or out of the Zone I am not sure . OUT I think, marginally, but it needs checking. There are all sorts on anomalies which are unfair for people living outside London, and another seems to be Hampton Court.
