To celebrate the Royal Air Force's leading role in helping the UK and our allies reach higher and faster than before the RAF Museums have created a week of fun family activities, for October Half Term, that explore RAF jets and the RAF's role in protecting space. The operations are sited in North London, officially Hendon, its traditional name, and close by Colindale Station on the Northern Line, and ten minutes from Junction 4 of the M1. Cosford is centrally located with good motorway access from the M6 southbound (Junction 12) via the A5, one mile from junction 3 on the M54 for northbound travellers. The Museum is only 30 minutes from the centre of Birmingham and ten minutes from Telford.
At Hendon Hangar 1 there is a digital fun quiz to test your memory, solve a riddle and find the answers to questions. When you visit Hangar 2 take part with Jack, the squadron dog, in his family trail to find out all about the WWI in the Air. Challenge your child in Hangars 3, 4, 5 by discovering the aircraft, stories and fascinating science behind our collections. Join Bob, an RAF pilot, in Hangar 6 as you explore 'The RAF in an Age of Uncertainty'.
Cosford features the Shropshire Astronomical Society – free lunchtime talk running daily in the National Cold War Exhibition Lecture Theatre, exploring all things space.
The Society has come in with Space Crafts, free activity for young space rangers enabling them to build their own pocket solar system or straw rocket under the wing of a Vulcan bomber and explore an interactive model of the Solar System. There is also a Space Suit Display with real 'astronauts' in what is described as a fun, informative, interactive display. Free activity for young space rangers, plus the Space Odyssey Planetarium and the Galileo Dome.
And when it comes to Space, on offer are Stargazing Evenings with the Astronomical Society exploring the night sky. £7.50 per adult. £5.00 per child.
