ID required for US domestic travel

It may seem a long way off, and should not affect international travellers who presumably would have passed through passport control on entry to the United States, but next year (2025) passengers will require ID when checking in for US domestic flights.

If you have come in from abroad keep your passport on your person. That is a general rule for all overseas trips ex-UK.

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended its REAL ID deadline until 7 May 2025.

From then onwards the DHS will require every air traveller, age 18 or older, to have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s licence or identification card, state-issued enhanced driver’s licence, or another acceptable ID to fly within the US.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licences.” The Act and implementing regulations establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licences and identification cards and prohibit federal agencies, such as the Transport Authorisation Authority (TSA), from accepting licences and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards for official purposes, such as getting through the airport security checkpoint to board a plane.

If you are living in the US, REAL ID cards are marked with a star at the top. A local state driver’s licence agency can help you get a REAL ID compliant card.
