Italian carrier ITA Airways is to introduce flights between London City Airport (LCY) and Leonardo da Vinci Rome (FCO) from 1 April 2024.The new route will begin with twice daily services and a single rotation on Saturday and Sunday. It complements ITA’s flights between LCY and Milan Linate (LIN), currently three times daily but up to five from 10 April.
ITA was created in August 2021 after yet another Alitalia meltdown and has quickly been welcomed as a full member of Skyteam. The airline is currently majority-owned by the Italian government.
On 25 May 2023, Lufthansa acquired 41% from the Italian Government, making ITA Airways Lufthansa's fifth network carrier. Lufthansa also announced its intention to target two years in acquiring the remaining 59% and make ITA a wholly-owned subsidiary. The acquisition is currently awaiting approval from the European Commission.
Airbus A220 aircraft will be used on the routes with a 125-seat capacity in a single class configuration.
Flight time between LCY and FCO is 2hrs 30mins, and as the airport points out the timekeeping is exceptionally good, the parallel taxiway completed during the pandemic allowing very little holdups either for landings or take-offs.
