Hungarian airline Wizz Air has announced that it plans to return to Israel from 1 March. It will offer three times weekly flights to Tel Aviv from Bucharest, Budapest, Krakow, Luton, Rome Fiumicino and Sofia.
The Luton service will be flown by Airbus A321 Neo aircraft offering 239 seats on a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, the airline gambling that the lack of orthodox Jewish passengers outbound on the Sabbath will be more than made up by heavy booking for the early Sunday morning departure from Tel Aviv.
Wizz Air is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Following an intervention by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) the airline has been forced to pay out an extra £1.2m to customers involved in flight disruptions. The payments cover costs for alternative flights, transfers, and hotel and food bills for passengers who were left stranded due to very short notice flight cancellations.
El Al continues to fly from both Heathrow and Luton to Tel Aviv, but British Airways, easyJet and Virgin Atlantic are monitoring the situation and have no confirmed dates yet for the return of services. Ryanair does not fly from the UK to Israel but says that it will resume a reduced schedule to Tel Aviv from several European airports on 1 February, citing the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) guidance and similar moves among other carriers.
