London to New York

Data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows that there are more passengers from US to UK in the spring, and more balanced during the second half of the year. Cumulative passenger numbers 2023 (to November) from US to UK is 7.2 million, and from UK to US is 6.8 million.

This coming summer with a choice of two New York airports (Kennedy JFK & Newark EWR) and two from London (Gatwick LGW & Heathrow LHR) the North Atlantic crossing remains the world’s busiest long-haul air route.  LHR – JFK will offer 28 daily flights at the peak plus seven to EWR.

OAG is the data supplier when it comes to actual seat numbers and the Luton-based aviation analyst says that on any given day this coming summer there will be 7,421 seats available from LHR to New York and 1,223 out of LGW).

LGW – JFK will have five daily flights this summer, all to JFK with the low-cost carrier Norse leading the way offering two services every day in the peak months.  Delta returned for last summer after a 15-year absence. JetBlue, with a daily slot, arrived for the first time in September 2021.

Non-alliance carriers Norse Atlantic and JetBlue will have 18% of London departures, Delta with Virgin Atlantic 36%, and British Airways (BA) and American Airlines 46%.

Norse's 338-seat 787-9s have the highest capacity per flight, followed closely by BA's single daily LGW-configured 777-200ER and the Virgin LHR A350-1000s.

What is curious, and for reasons not explained, BA does not use any of its 12 469-seat A380s on the New York service. The out of production Airbus giant is used on seven routes.  Chicago O'Hare, a double daily Dallas Fort Worth, Dubai, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco.
