Back again as Europe’s number one airport, Heathrow is gearing up for a very normal but busy Christmas.
In an update it announced a 5.9m-passenger throughput in October, 84% of 2019 levels moving 50m in the year to date, 74% of 2019 levels.
Praising stakeholders it says companies across Heathrow have done an incredible job in recruiting and training around 16,000 colleagues over the last 12 months, which is keeping capacity and demand in balance. At current rates of recruitment, it is on track to get back to pre-pandemic employment levels before the peak summer holiday period in 2023.
TNU has experienced the new security lanes in Terminal 2 which will allow passengers to leave laptops and liquids in their bags and will be introduced throughout the airport during 2023. Home Office regulations still stipulate that belts have to come off even if the buckle is an obvious piece of metal, the old ‘eyeball’ not good enough to satisfy the bureaucracy.
John Holland-Kaye, CEO of Heathrow, said: “We have come so far since Omicron grounded Christmas travel plans last year. Heathrow, our airline partners and their handlers are all working together to make sure everyone can be reunited with their loved ones this Christmas.”
