Hertz dumps electrics

The Times of London reports that the mighty Hertz Corporation, one of the world’s biggest car rental companies, is to sell about 20,000 electric vehicles from its US inventory because of the expenses related to collision and damage repairs with its fleet of 60,000 plug-in and rechargeable cars.

This rejection by Hertz is seen as a major reversal for the promoters of petrol free cars, but Hertz is pragmatic.  It has been supporting electric cars for over a decade and this might be seen as a short-term measure.

Hertz says that poor second-hand electric car values and the cost of repairing damaged vehicles has prompted this decision.

Orders for 100,000 Volvo US-made Polstars, some 65,000 Teslas, 175,000 electric cars from General Motors have been cancelled.

In the meantime Hertz and the ride-hailing company Uber are expanding their partnership in Europe. Hertz wants to provide up to 25,000 electric cars for Uber drivers in European capitals by 2025 with Amsterdam, London and Paris as the major targets.
