British Airways from London City Airport

BA marches on from London City Airport (LCY) whilst ignored by the local council.

Newham Council, with the support of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, has published what it terms its “Transformative vision for the Royal Dock” with LCY very much on the front cover, but no mention of the airport in the official press release, nor the rejuvenation of Silvertown by adding an Elizabeth Line station.

BA CityFlyer has confirmed its routes and frequencies for summer 2024.  It will operate 20 aircraft as opposed to 24 in 2019 and it seems any news of more modern and quieter aircraft has been put on hold for the time being.  The local council has not helped by turning down a planning application for revised airport opening hours.

During the summer BA will revamp its now elderly Embraer 190 fleet with the introduction of new lightweight seats and raising capacity from 98 to106 (12%), and with 2+2 still more comfortable than KLM’s 112. CityFlyer offers a snack, coffee, soft drinks, beer, wine, and spirits rather than BA Mainline's water and biscuits.  Minimal check in is 20 minutes and no gate is more than a five-minute walk. The airport points out that touchdown to the DLR station can be as little as 12 minutes.

An announcement is expected shortly of a new CEO following Rob Sinclair’s abrupt signalling of his departure late last year.
