With seemingly undue haste Transport for London (TfL) is proposing to introduce a 20mph road speed limit on sections of the major A503, A501, A41, A1, A10, A11 and A1203 from February 2023 in the boroughs of Camden, Islington, Hackney, Haringey and Tower Hamlets. It is subject to consultation but is bound to be severely objected to by commercial interests and residents. Bus services run by TfL will be affected too.
The Department for Transport (DfT) have put out statistics supporting the project, noting that the police reported speed as a contributory factor in almost half of fatal collisions in 2020.
Penny Rees, Head of Healthy Streets Investment, TfL, and Jeremy Leach, London Campaign Coordinator for 20's Plenty for Us, in support of the plan, says that 28km of roads are involved with the 20mph limit.
The London Evening Standard reports that a survey by Queen’s University Belfast shows that restricting speed limits to 20mph in town and city centres has little impact on road traffic collisions and casualties.
Anyone can have their say but they must be over 13. On 30 November there has been 204 responses to the plan.
