Public enquiry pushes ahead. With the highly successful railway interchange now complete, (one stop from London Bridge in 29 minutes) plus a string of new airlines and destinations, Gatwick Airport looks set for a boom year in 2024.
Also just finished is the airport's runway rapid exit taxiway which enables arriving aircraft to leave the runway more efficiently, increasing resilience, reducing delays and limiting carbon and noise emissions. It also helps reduce delays and go-arounds, as well as supporting the airport’s sustainability targets.
Passengers can currently choose from 56 airlines flying to 220 destinations. This includes 169 short-haul destinations across a large European network and 51 long-haul routes. Airlines flying new long-haul routes from the airport include Air India, Air Mauritius, China Southern, Delta, Ethiopian Airlines and Saudia.
Gatwick’s planning application to bring its existing Northern Runway into routine use, is currently being scrutinised in detail by a panel of independent inspectors. Malcolm Ginsberg of Travel News Update has been called by the panel inspector to a hearing as an expert witness.
Please see a Gatwick Airport press release which gives more details.
