Major upgrade for Luton Airport Express

Luton Airport Monopoly.

Luton Airport (LTN) passengers travelling via the Luton Airport Express from London St Pancras are set to benefit from a major revamp.

East Midlands Railway (EMR), the service operator, is embarking on a £27.6m train refurbishment programme.   It operates on a 24-hour basis with a total journey time of just 32 minutes.

Ticket prices start at £10 including the DART people mover transfer to the airport.

The disastrous fire on 10 October 2023 (see TNU November 2023 Luton Airport fire - DART & parking) had been a disruptor but the airport has managed well under the circumstances.  Users of Car Park 1 must pre-book and the Mid-Stay Car Park is also the drop-off and collection point for terminal passengers arriving by car.

The upgrade will see the fleet of electric class 360 Luton Airport Express trains refurbished with new 2+2 seating in a mixture of airline style and bay seats, as well as expanded luggage racks and new charging points and passenger information systems.

Last month, the Luton DART also celebrated its first anniversary, with news that the fully electric automated people mover has transported over 2.7m passengers between Luton Airport Parkway railway station and the terminal in that time. Its operation has not been affected by the fire.

Nick Platts, Managing Director, Luton Rising, the local council community development arm, said: “The Luton DART has already proved a huge hit with passengers and is encouraging more and more travellers to get to and from our airport by train wherever possible, reducing the impact of car journeys on our roads. Every passenger using London Luton Airport and the Luton DART means more support for services in Luton, and vulnerable people in particular, who most need the help we fund through our unique £7.4m annual contribution to local voluntary, community and charitable organisations”.

On a less serious note, the airport has been chosen for one of the top spots on the board of the new MONOPOLY: Luton Edition. As well as the airport, the game features more than 30 of Luton’s most loved landmarks from the Hat Factory to Luton Town Hall and Kenilworth Road, the home of Luton Town Football Club.
