As fast as it can Transport for London (TfL) is gradually introducing wi-fi across its rail network.Travellers on the Elizabeth Line between Liverpool Street and Paddington now benefit from high-speed 4G and 5G mobile coverage while transiting central London.
Further tunnelled sections to Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Woolwich will be connected during the summer.
Mobile coverage continues to be rolled out across the network with Hyde Park Corner and Russell Square recently connected for the first time.
Sections of the Northern, Bakerloo, Piccadilly and Victoria lines are anticipated to go live in the coming month.
As well as all eight ‘underground’ Elizabeth line stations across London, 36 Tube stations have started to offer mobile coverage to customers in the ticket halls, platform areas and interchanges. About 30% of Tube stations are underground, and when combined with Tube stations above ground, it means that nearly 70% of Tube stations are now connected.
All four mobile network operators – EE, Three, UK Vodafone and Virgin Media (VMO2) – are taking part in the rollout.
TfL points out that along with allowing customers to stay connected the expanding coverage will also give rail and Tube staff better connectivity to pass on information and host the new Emergency Services Network (ESN).
