Name change for airport

“You can’t be serious”.

John McEnroe’s famous words!

But that is a comment after an airport changed its title.

Italy’s Milan Malpensa, the country’s second busiest air hub, has been officially renamed after Silvio Berlusconi the scandal-prone former Italian Prime Minister.  One wag was quick to retort.  “It should be stripped of this title”.

The renaming is immediate, although, as is traditional, the three-letter IATA code remains, MXP, typified by Beijing staying PEK, Mumbai BOM and Ben Gurion TLV.

Italy’s civil aviation authority (ENAC) has approved a request by the Lombardy region (of which Milan is the capital) to rename the airport in honour of Berlusconi, who died last year aged 86.

The former political leader is best described as ‘colourful’.  In 2012 he served one year in jail for tax fraud and had a certain reputation regarding ‘bunga’ parties.

Nine municipal councils in the Malpensa area have also opposed the name change in a regional court appeal after claiming they were not consulted on the decision.
