Next spring the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be introduced at a cost of €7 (approx. £6) for three years, or in other words what is in effect a visa will be required for travel when entering the European Union. For UK citizens Ireland will be exempt one would guess.
Also to watch out for is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) which comes into force 10 November 2024 for all non-EU citizens. It is automated (as with Brits passing into the UK) but includes fingerprints. How this is implemented remains to be seen.
If you are travelling on a cruise and stopping at any of the European countries involved in EES, whether you need to go through the EES system will depend on where your cruise starts and where the itinerary ends.
If the cruise departure is from a UK port and returns to a UK port, you will not need to complete the EES registration for EU day trips that are part the itinerary.
If you are flying to a European country to pick up a cruise, you will complete the EES process at your arrival airport. If your cruise ends in an EU country, your exit information will be captured at the border check of the country you are flying home from.
