CRUISING PLUS: To Sherwood Forest

TNU has reported previously on the similarity of Warner Hotels and deep-sea cruising.  Each offers much the same, and with Warner, without leaving the country.

We have found another comparison.  It is easy to get lost in both.  It needs a few days of residence to find one’s way around.

Having enjoyed Warner’s Heythrop Park, near Blenheim, last November, Thoresby Hall, in the heart of Sherwood Forest, seemed a good idea, a straightforward 140 mile run from North London.  And so it proved.

The Warner complex is split into two, Thoresby Hall, a Grade I listed building, dating only from 1871 now with 48 bedrooms, plus a cira 2000 extension of 200 rooms which also houses the reception and Late Lounge cabaret venue.  There are extensive very well kept grounds covering 30 acres.

The Hall itself is a real rabbit warren of a place, complete with a spa, gym and swimming pool. There is a cinema, library and various bars and lounges.  It is very easy to get lost, but somehow the modern architects have managed to incorporate lifts!  Every room is accessible.  The impressive Great Hall, 46ft high and just over 60ft long, serves as a lounge, with occasional musical accompaniment.  If you are keen to learn the history of the place Warner offers an excellent audio tour, but you will have to find your way to the Spa reception to collect!  Why not provide at the check-in point?

Within The Hall is the Warner’s standard Market Kitchen, and The Brasserie 32, nicely laid out in the classic Victorian Blue Room, with full waiter service.  This is the alternative restaurant.

There is fun every evening in the Late Lounge, our pick from a three-night stay, Andrew Bourn, entertainer, fine singer, and comedian.  Beverley Knight, Tony Hadley and David Essex, are booked for other Warner venues.

Within a very short walking distance is The Royal Lancers & Nottinghamshire Yeomanry Museum.  Complete with Centurion tank.

The package is the same as all the Warner retreats.  Plenty of daytime activities, including specially for this place, archery.  For Robin Hood fans the Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre is just a short 3.8 miles away.

We have got our eyes on Bodelwyddan Castle, North Wales, but it is a long way from London.
