Cadet pilots wanted

British Airways (BA) has announced that it is launching a brand-new cockpit cadet programme that will fund training for up to 60 aspiring pilots a year. Also recruiting ab-initio pilots is fellow IAG member Aer Lingus.

Readers may recall that this type of endeavour operated in the past at BA’s own school at Hamble and at the Oxford Air Training School.  BA observers will also note that the scheme, called the ‘British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy’ uses a term being dropped by the airline’s marketing operation.  (See www.travelnewsupdate.co.uk/article/326)

Initial training can cost tens of thousands of pounds.  The price of becoming a pilot has made the profession prohibitive for many. This cost will now be funded by BA – with a multi-million-pound investment from the airline into its next generation of pilots – making it a genuine career path.

The airline is working closely with Fantasy Wings, the leading UK organisation for diversity in aviation and a member of the BA Better World Community Fund, to promote careers to young people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, and young women in the aviation industry.

Aer Lingus is running a pilot training programme for the first times since 2019 and will recruit 18 candidates in this year’s round. But but you had better be quick as applications close 16th August 2023. The course is fully sponsored by the airline.
