FIFA World Cup update

The World Cup gets nearer with the first match due to kick off Sunday 20 November, Qatar v Ecuador (11:00 local 08:00 GMT) at the Al Bayt Stadium, the only ground not actually in Doha, but sited at Al Khor, about 30 miles to the north with a 60,000 capacity. See BTN 27 June for more details.

For England the tournament gets underway on Monday 21 November (10:00 local 13:00 GMT). Here the venue is the Khalifa International Stadium, originally dating from 1976 and hosting many major events including 2006 Asian Games.

It adjoins The Torch Hotel, Villaggio Mall shopping complex, Aspire Park and is sited between two stations at the end of the Gold Line.  It was the venue last June for the IATA AGM final event with Jennifer Lopez as the star attraction. This match clashes with Airlines 2022 (see in this issue of TNU). Wales v USA is at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan, with the kick-off 16:00 local 19:00 GMT.

A number of events will be taking place prior to the tournament including the naming of MSC World Europa which is expected to be undertaken by Sophia Loren, Godmother to the MSC fleet.  Sophia is 88.

One word of warning.  NordVPN, the world’s leading VPN match service provider and also a major cyber security company, has issued a dire warning regarding the use of unauthorised sites to purchase tickets highlighting StubHub, Viagogo, Ticombo and Sports Events 365.  www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tickets is the only legitimate source of tickets.
