Propliner - A short review

One hundred and seventy-two pages of pure aviation nostalgia. That is the only way to describe the 2024 edition of the Propliner Annual.

Propliner Aviation Magazine was first launched in January 1979 as a journal devoted to piston-engined and turboprop aircraft. The magazine concentrated upon those classic airliners of a bygone age, the magnificent Constellation, Britannia, Convairliner, Douglas piston types, Stratocruiser and Viscount and that once dominated the world’s air routes. The Short Calcutta of Imperial Airways is covered too. A stylish way to travel.

Long since relegated to less glorious work, many of these fine aircraft still fly today, and the quarterly magazine rekindled memories of the golden era, whilst spotlighting the activities of contemporary piston and turboprop operators.

Propliner evolved into an annual nine editions back.

Published 1 May, the 2024 edition covers over 40 types with two highlights, a Vickers Viking G-AGRW, for many years a roadside café near the Soesterberg Air Base in Holland, and the Douglas C47, in civil life the Dakota, and its major role in the D-Day landings 80 years ago. Acquired by the Blackbushe Heritage Trust G-AGRW can be seen at the airport museum and maybe one day might fly again.

Editor Tony Merton Jones refuses to go digital with the book but at £15.00 including postage it is tremendous value.
